A backyard pond is a living ecosystem. It requires constant maintenance, which may be impractical for the busy water gardener. Even if you have nothing to do but wade in and take care of your pond, it is still in your best interest to create a pond that can take care of itself. That’s why it is important to understand the Nitrogen Cycle, the natural process that keeps your pond healthy for both fish and plants.
Clean Water
The most basic element of a pond is the water. The water is important to your pond life as air is for you and me. Chemicals that are in the water can wreak havoc on your pond, especially in the early stages when your pond has yet to mature. Be sure to treat any water you add to your pond, whether you’re filling it for the first time or just replacing evaporated water.
Why do you need chemical-free water? Aside from being unhealthy to fish and plants, chemicals prevent the growth of for beneficial bacteria. Bacteria are the key element in the Nitrogen Cycle as they are responsible for breaking down organic waste. Left unchecked, waste material will turn your water garden into a cesspool of debris and pond algae.
The Biological Filter
As mentioned, beneficial bacteria is necessary for your pond’s health. The more bacteria you have, the more aquatic life your pond can support. One of the simplest ways to grow bacteria is by using a biological filter. Just remember that biological filters need time to mature and improperly cleaning it can kill the bacteria you’ve worked so hard to cultivate.
Adding Pond Life
Once you’ve got some good bacteria in your pond, you’ll be able to stock some fish and plants. The decomposing plant matter, fish waste and uneaten fish food feed the bacteria, which in turn clean the water of nitrogen. If the water starts getting cloudy, it may be caused by dying bacteria. Some fish pond supplies are designed to clear up the water.
Maintaining the Cycle
Get a good water test kit as you will be using it constantly throughout your pond’s life. Make sure to keep pH levels and electrolytes balanced so that your fish can thrive. In time, the Nitrogen Cycle in your pond will stabilize and you’ll have much more time to simply enjoy the sight of your outdoor pond.
